Firing decals are used to decorate glass and glazed ceramics, among other things. They consist of a thin plastic film with color pigments that is fired in a ceramic kiln and then become dishwasher safe. The plastic film is attached to a piece of paper which is soaked in lukewarm water for about 30 seconds to remove the decal. The piece of paper represents the object, in other words as it sits on the paper it should sit on the goods (if it is turned upside down the decal will disappear during firing).The decal is then carefully transferred onto the glazed ware and fired at around 795°C. On glass at 650-730°C.

Tips and Troubleshooting When Using Decals

1. If you are decorating difficult shapes

a) Warm up the item. This makes the decal softer upon contact and easier to apply to curved or difficult surfaces.

b) Slightly increase the water temperature in the decorating bowl.

2. If you see a halo or “ghost” around the decal after firing

a) Check that the decorating water is clean.

b) Check that the decal was fired at the correct temperature.

c) Check that the kiln was properly ventilated during firing.

3. How to store decal sheets properly

a) Store the decal sheets in a dry place.

b) Do not store them near heat or light sources.

c) Do not store them in cold areas.

d) We recommend storing them at 16–19°C.

4. If you live in an area with hard water

It may be helpful to add one small drop of washing liquid to the water. Do not add more than one drop, as too much washing liquid may dissolve the adhesive gum from the paper.

5. If the decal disappears completely or partially after firing

a) The decal was applied upside down.

b) The firing temperature was too high.
