Relay Skutt kiln
Kiln supply
Description
A relay is the component in the oven's control box that physically turns the power on and off when it receives instructions. Relays wear out and may need to be replaced at regular intervals. This relay fits all Skutt ovens.
Information
What causes relay failure?
- Wear and tear: Just like the brakes on a car, relays in your kiln have a limited lifespan and will eventually need to be replaced. Their lifespan is measured in cycles (how many times they turn on and off), typically in the millions. Since all relays usually cycle together (unless zone control is used), it is recommended to replace them as a set to reduce the risk of kiln downtime due to a worn relay.
- Overheating: Relays cannot withstand excessive heat. If the room is poorly ventilated and the temperature exceeds 41°C (105°F) while the kiln is running, ventilation should be improved. In some cases, a fan directed at the control box can significantly improve conditions at low cost.
- Poor connection: Relays can also fail prematurely due to poor electrical connections. If this occurs, the issue should be corrected before the kiln is used again. Check all crimped and screwed connections to ensure they are tight, clean, and free from carbon deposits caused by overheating.
