Measuring Glaze Density - An Alternative to Viscosity
Learn how to measure glaze density- an easier alternative to measuring viscosity for your low-fire clear dipping glazes.
How to test Glaze Density
There are many variables when testing glaze viscosity; from the cup used and the instant a stopwatch timer starts, to knowing when the first break in the glaze stream occurs. Testing glaze density is a more accurate way to ensure that your clear dipping glaze is at the proper consistency for ideal use.
Step 1:
Weigh empty graduated cylinder then Tare the scale by pressing the button on the scale. This sets your scale up properly by accounting for the weight of the cylinder.
Step 2:
Mix your dipping glaze properly and fill the cylinder within 10 mL of max fill level.
Step 3:
Weigh the graduated cylinder with glaze.
Step 4:
Grams of glaze divided by mL = density.
Example: 120g/90ml=1.33
Step 5:
Compare your density to our range. If the reading is too high, add distilled water (½ cup at a time), mix well, and test again. If the reading is too low, add some fresh glaze, mix, and test again.
