Sodium Silicate
Description
Sodium Silicate (Sodium Carbonate) can be used as a thinner for, e.g. slip, glazes, or to make ceramic slip from powder to liquid mass. If the ceramic slip has become too thick for casting, you can add a few drops to make it smooth again. Sodium silicate does not disappear during firing and can affect the behavior and expansion coefficient of the clay. Can be damaged if frozen. 473 ml.
Information
Small amounts (e.g., ½ teaspoon) of sodium silicate diluted with water (5:1 dilution) can be added to 8 liters of ceramic slip to reduce viscosity (make the clay thinner). There is no “fixed” amount. Add only as much as is needed to reduce the viscosity so that the mold drains optimally. Excessive additives lead to poor casting speed and cracks in the greenware, it can even affect the glaze firing later on .
