Saturated color, dependability, and versatility make Velvets as popular for professionals as they are for children. Velvets fire true-to-color as a Cone 05/06 underglaze or fired to Cone 6. Some colors remain true as high as Cone 10.

Try two finish possibilities: When left unglazed these colors have the rich textural appearance of velvet; when covered with AMACO clear transparent matte of Clear Gloss they intensify in color. Can be easily applied to wet clay, greenware, or mature Cone 04 bisque. Food safe when applied and fired under Amaco F-10, LG-10 or HF-9 clearglaze. 473 ml. Examples on our homepage are on one half glazed with F-10 and fired to 1040°C.

Our glazes can develop what are known as oolites, which form through a natural process involving certain raw materials in the glaze. These are small white spheres of varying sizes. If they are detected, they should be strained out (using a 60-mesh sieve) before use. The glaze is then used as usual.

The glaze is applied to fired or unfired clay. It can be fired with a clear glaze, which intensifies the color and makes the piece food-safe, or without a clear glaze, in which case a rough surface is achieved at 1020°C; at higher temperatures, certain colors may become velvety matte to glossy. We recommend always testing our glazes before applying them to production pieces, as different clays, firing curves, and temperatures may yield results different from those shown on our website. The examples on the website are glazed with F-10 clear glaze on one half and without clear glaze on the other, and fired at 1040°C. For earthenware, we recommend LG-10 clear glaze, and for stoneware, HF-9 from Amaco. If using a different clear glaze, test it first.
