Underglazes are a liquid clay with colorants added to them. Since they are made of the same materials as clay, underglazes did not melt like glaze and remain in place when fired (at stoneware temperatures underglazes can change color ans struktur and get glossy depending on the added color pigment). Underglazes (also often called engobes) can be applied to unfired clay (greenware) or bisque ware. When applied according to the manufacturer’s directions, underglazes are opaque and can be used for detailed imagery. Underglazes require a food safe approved clear glaze applied and fired over them to become food-safe.
Our underglazes, crayons and engobes for Earthenware and Stoneware are ready mixed for brushing and need to be covered with a fitting clear glaze to be food safe. At stoneware temperatures structural and color changes can occur. Recommended as a clear glaze for earthenware: NTBR, EM-2134. For stoneware: HF-9, MS-100, SW-004, STG-1200, STG-1100, MS-29. Always test first when firing over 1020°C and when using a different clear glaze as recommended.
